It is a year or more since I decided to do this project. To choose one of my songs to represent as many of the different types of love I have experienced. Every time I have thought about it it has seemed clear and interesting. Every time I have commenced it I have over thought it and lost my feel for it.

The idea came out of my feelings about love. When I was younger I believed in only one kind of love. Now I believe there are many types of emotions and feelings that count as love. Each is proof of the reach and power of love. Each is valid and true, beautiful and tender, sincere and long lasting.

Over time my songwriting has grown from its early focus on that one type of love, to finding stories of love in many life experiences. I thought there could easily be twenty types of love I have written about. We shall see how many I have at the end. Who knows how many different types have been written about by all the songwriters of the world.

This is a work in progress. I am going to begin it and see what comes. In no particular order at first. I will change it if it needs to flow in a different way. One day I will add the thoughts and feelings of an other to all of this.

This is a song about a woman whose husband leaves for work one day, never to return, lost at sea as so many have been over the ages.

The living must go on and some move on to other loves. Some, like Caroline, spend their whole lives loving only one man even though his fate is certain. Imagine Caroline aged twenty or thirty, childless or with young children. Imagine anyone whose life has known similar circumstances and who have made similar choices.

The more I think about people capable of this kind of love the more I am amazed by it. Though I can barely comprehend it I know it has existed a million times. What love! What purity? What sacrifice? So deserving of a place in my 20 LOVE SONGS PROJECT.

1. Loving only one person, forever even though you know you will never see them again.

Song: Dearest Caroline

Out amongst the daydreams is dearest Caroline

waiting for a summer breeze to bring him back to her

while the wind blows hard against her face

and another year has passed her by

his faithful Caroline still displays her patient grace

There may always have been, “long distance love” but I wonder whether the possibilities for it have ever been so near.

There are those who meet and fall in love while being in the same place and then move away from each other, but this category is about those who fall in love having never met. Fall in love with someone who you’ve never met or seen in real life I hear you ask. Yep, put me down as a believer.

Indeed it is one of many wonderful and profound things about a place I spend some time, the virtual world known as, SecondLife. I love that this happens. I admire the courage these people show by following their hearts no matter how and where they found their true love. I know it teaches me something about how the seeds of love are truly sown, unrestricted by place, distance and tangible things.

I couldn’t have written better words than these by Lalita Graves, to explore “long distance love”.

Song: If I Could (Lalita’s Song)(Lyrics: Lalita Graves. Music: Bright Oh)

If i could fly away i'd leave my world

to fly straight into yours

id happily leave, my worldly goods

to share your distant shores
