EAST OF NOWHERE

Drifting across the wide open spaces

stuck east of nowhere where the winter rages

he called out a name in a crowded cafe

and he opened a heart

Sometimes he just needed someone

to give him a dollar or two

but once in a while when his heart was on fire

he needed, comfort too

Take me higher than i can fly alone

teach me inspire me as i come and go

‘cos in the chill of night where loneliness bites

i'll be on my way

He was battered and bruised and on the inside the same

and he'd just about given the whole game away

when he cried out a name in a crowded cafe

and he won a heart

At times he could talk for hours

and then just as quickly give in

cos every word seemed to unearth

a mem'ry, breaking him

Take me higher than i can fly alone

if you let me inside you i may never let you go

until the chill of night where loneliness strikes

sends me on my way

He was born and half raised but toughened too soon

and all too few women ever bothered to swoon

when he called out your name as one final refrain

you saved his heart

At times he could get all romantic

with a thirst for his life that just sang

but once in a while when his soul was on fire

he grew quiet, and never rang

Take me higher than i can fly alone

walk slowly beside me until it's time to go

‘cos in the chill of night when destiny strikes

I'll be on my way I'll be on my way

This is some kind of variation of “Star crossed lovers” and those people drawn into relationships they know make no sense, where the other person is so unlike the person they thought they would spend their life with, and in any event where they do not expect it to last for reasons outside their best intentions.

In this song it is a woman who answers the need of a lost soul and gets to experience the glorious moments when he rediscovers his thirst for life and love only to see the inevitability of his demons finally break them apart.
